The nesting boxes we were using were cheap wood. They worked fine, the chickens would lay their eggs in them. What more could you ask for? Well we had some problems with mites this winter and mites like to hide in crack and seems, like in the nesting boxes. Chickens like privacy when they are laying and ours didn't really provide any. The last straw... Our chickens started eating their eggs. So I was on the search for new boxes, and found these.
Under the perch in the front there is a covered box where the egg are contained after they are laid and roll down the insert. They are a little more covered to provide some privacy. They are plastic which means easy cleaning. I was also happy about the perch part, since I don't think the girls have enough places to perch and hang out. Right now the chickens are still getting use to them, I will have to put some straw in there to get them to start laying in them, but I think these new boxes will be great!
You can check them out here.
