This also marks the first day of Meghan Madness 2014. I don't really have a plan this year, not that I ever really do, but I am about to turn 31 on the the 31st making this my golden birthday! So golden is kinda my theme, we'll see how it goes.
I was trying to get in the Irish spirit and I saw this recipe on Skinnytaste.com and thought I should give it a try. This soup sounds a little weird, but I already had all of the ingredients, and wasn't sure what to cook with leeks.
First finely chop the leeks.
Saute them in a pan with some butter till soft.
Add chicken stock and milk, heat till boiling.
Add oatmeal and season with salt and pepper.
Cook on low for about 45 minutes.
It's actually pretty tasty!
I hope you are wearing green and find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
Yesterday was the Shamrock Shuffle 3K. When training to run, my biggest problem is consistency, and as always I had gotten behind on my running schedule. Also, when it comes time to run a race I tend to get excited and want to pass people which means I run faster than I should, I forget about pacing myself, then get tired and have to walk.. So my goal was to jog as slowly as I could and not walk for the whole race.
My husband and I before the race began.
After, needed water!
Coffee makes everything better.
I am happy to report, I met my goal. I did not walk at all!! My time last year was 24:09 and this year was 20:59. I'm pretty excited about that, especially considering, when I'm running on the treadmill at home I've been running at a 4 mph or 15 min per mile pace. I ran this 3K at under 12 min per mile or at a little over 5 mph pace. I know that I am still the slowest runner ever, but that is really good for me. After all fitness is not about being better than someone else, it is about being better than you use to be. (Saw that quote on Pinterest!)
In about four weeks I'll be running a 5K. I need to stay on top of it this time.
After the race we stuck around downtown for some of the St. Patrick's Day festivities and took advantage of the great restaurants.
Then we came home and relaxed. The weather was beautiful. The girls really enjoyed laying out on the deck. I'm glad we took advantage of the weather while we could since today it is cold and raining.
I think it has become clear, that in the two years since I have started this blog, I still have no idea what I want it to be. I guess it's just a reflection of myself, especially since I'm about to turn 31 and I still have no idea what I want to be when I "grow up"!
And now I will try blogging about clothes. I don't feel like I am very fashionable, but I, like many women, look into my closet and feel like I have nothing to wear. I have seen people do 30x30's and that is a wonderful idea, however Monday through Friday I wear scrubs to work, so I couldn't really get this idea to work for me. Lately I have noticed that I was wearing this black dress a lot, because it is comfortable, and because it is plain, therefore easy to make look different easily with the addition and subtraction of a few accessories. I know other people have great blogs about how to use basics in your wardrobe and keeping things looking fresh and exciting, and they are much better at this than me, but I wanted to make a visual for myself with stuff from my own closet. So I thought, "why not post it on my blog?".
Here is the black dress, simple and inexpensive.
So here is my March idea.
March is still cold but we are starting to see signs of spring so I liked adding this light weight mint scarf.
And of course, most days it is still pretty chilly so I added a jacket.
This coming Saturday I will be running in the Shamrock Shuffle for the second year in a row. It is only a 3K, but I am also registered for a 5K in April. However, as always, I have not kept up with my training and am quickly falling behind schedule. Wish me luck!
I have been looking at this Rit color remover for a while. I had a white shirt that had turned a bit yellow with something in the wash, and I really wanted it white again. It was worth a shot and I thought it would also be fun to try to lighten or ombre some other clothes I have.
I followed the directions on the package and used the stove top method.
This stuff does smell pretty bad so make sure to have good ventilation.
I could tell right away that some of the color had come on of the shirt. Once this had soaked long enough I threw it in the washer and moved on to the next.
Now the fun stuff. I forgot to take a good before picture of these jeans. I just wanted to lighten them a bit so they would be more minty.
It was a success!
The white shirt is not perfectly white but it is a huge improvement, and I think the mint jeans turned out perfect.
Then I tried to ombre these black jeans.
I had to let these soak longer than anything else, but finally I noticed the color starting to come out.
These still need some work. But don't worry, I have ideas!
